N J Sawatski, Canadian-born (1942), studied at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Fine Art Painting Major program. This was followed by one semester at University of Alberta (Calgary) Fine Arts Dept., exploring fine art applications of plastics techniques. In 1970 he completed the Advanced Painting program at Vancouver School of Art (now The Emily Carr School of Art & Design).
Following graduation, a painting submitted to the juried show Realisms ’70 at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts was accepted and subsequently purchased for the museum’s Permanent Collection. A year later the artist was awarded a Canada Council Arts Bursary for a one-year tenure to develop his painting. In 1973 a mixed-media work on paper was purchased by the Canada Arts Bank.
In the late 1970’s and early 80s the artist redirected his primary attention to commercial applied arts, establishing a freelance trade in graphic design and illustration for advertising and editorial markets.
In 1984-85 the artist resided in South East Asia, doing freelance illustration in Hong Kong, and working as an art director at a domestic Philippine advertising agency in Manila.
Upon return to Canada, the artist's South East Asian experience catalized a renewed passion for fine art. He commenced building a body of work which included mixed-media collage works on paper and acrylic paintings on canvas.
N.J. Sawatski currently lives in Montreal producing oil / acrylic paintings as well as exploring computer-based digital techniques generated as digital print editions and website-specific presentations.
