Paul Colpron works his Loft-studio,in the heart of Le Plateau, in Montreal, Canada. But don't expect to see his artwork around his workspace, because the minute his pieces are completed they are often sent on their way to homes of various knowledgeable collectors, or you can see his larger pieces over bars or restaurants on The Main, or in The Village. His characters are also seen in the Latin Quarter, as is the case of those two hieratic figures on St. Denis St., which have served as proud Cerberus-like gatekeepers of the famous St. Sulpice bar for the past year.
Another of his monumental sculptures has also stood guard, for the past several months, at the entrance to Cabaret Chez Mado. “It's a great honour to adorn some of Montreal's thoroughfares,” the sculptor admits.
Whether they are pure and geometric forms or outlandish composites, his sculptural works attest to a precise balance of their graphic line. They are reputed for their power of attraction and strong lyric sense, not to diminish the force of their highly developed comic quality and daring nature. Even though collectors can't get enough of his artwork, and retailers and restaurateurs constantly offer him their display windows, (his credits include the facades for Kilo and Scandale, among others) he is very careful to accept only the projects that he truly fancies. It should come as no surprise then that his very Nietzschean worldview can be summed up in two words, “Be yourself,” and that is true to his personal, yet contemporary style.
